What Is Bullying?

Bullying is the use of aggression with the intention of hurting another person.

Bullying can be:

  • Emotional: being unfriendly, excluding, tormenting (e.g. hiding books, threatening gestures)
  • Physical: pushing, kicking, hitting, punching or any use of violence
  • Racist: racial taunts, graffiti, gestures
  • Sexual: unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments
  • Homophobic: because of, or focusing on, the issue of sexuality
  • Verbal: name-calling, sarcasm, spreading rumours, teasing
  • Cyber: All areas of internet, such as email and internet chat room misuse
    • Mobile threats by text messaging and calls
    • Misuse of associated technology, i.e. camera and video facilities

Why is it Important to Respond to Bullying?

Bullying hurts. No one deserves to be a victim of bullying. Everybody has the right to be treated with respect. Students who are bullying need to learn different ways of behaving.

The faculty and staff at Treasure Mountain are committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all of our students so they can learn in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at our school. If bullying does occur, all students should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. This means that any member of the TMJH community who knows that bullying is happening is expected to tell a faculty member.

Anonymous Reporting of Bullying

We also recognize that fear of retaliation prevents many students from telling about bullying. This page is intended to offer a way to anonymously report bullying. Please recognize that, because it doesn't allow follow-up questioning, anonymous reporting may lack effectiveness. If you don't see a change in the bullying behavior after reporting it here, please tell an adult at TMJH.

The information you enter here will generate an anonymous email that will be sent to our administrators, Ms. Sutherland and Ms. Jenkins. The email will not include any information about you. Please include as much detail as possible (when, where, who, witnesses...) so that the school can act on your report. If the reported behavior continues, it's possible that more information is needed. In this case, please follow-up with Ms. Sutherland or Ms. Jenkins or another adult at TMJH.
